RED, WHITE & OUCH. Phoenix firefighters destroy a watermelon with a large firecracker – firecrackers of any size are illegal in Arizona – to demonstrate the explosive power of consumer-grade fireworks. “They’re more powerful than you might think,” Farren said. Instead of lighting your own fireworks, Phoenix fire officials recommend watching a professional public display.

HITTING THE STREETS. A group of teachers wave #RedforEd signs during the Paint Higley Red event on April 23, 2018. The protest came in the wake of the significantly larger Red for Ed walkout a week earlier, when thousands of teachers and parents rallied in front of the state capitol.

A HELPING HAND. Debi Elder (right), a community liaison with Haven Behavioral Hospital of Phoenix, escorts Vilma Bose, a Savanna House caregiver, to a dementia simulation. Headphones play confusing noises to simulate dementia, while modified sunglasses and gloves attempt to mimic other diseases common among seniors.
LAUNDRY DAY. Christopher Andree, an employee at OdySea Aquarium near Glendale, rinses saltwater from his wetsuit after a dive. Although OdySea’s filtration system leaves the tanks relatively clean, divers are needed to remove algae and maintain the tanks; the staff at OdySea collectively performs nearly 60 dives per week.

President Trump held a rally in Phoenix, Arizona on August 22, 2017, that attracted thousands of people. I spoke with supporters and protesters alike to hear their reasons for attending and their observations of the day's events.
I shot this video independently and edited it within hours of the event for same-night publishing on downtowndevil.com. I interviewed 15 people before tear gas shut the event down (9 interviews made it into the published video.)
